How do I make a simple FM audio transmitter/receiver?

I am interested in starting to build simple integrated circuits, but all of the schematics I find online by googling don't match what I want to do. I want to build a simple transmitter that operates on 120v and a single frequency. I then want to build a receiver on the same fixed frequency, also powered by 120v. The whole thing needs to have a range of 30 feet or so. Any ideas on books that show me how to do this or ready-made schematics and easy instructions? I am very good with a soldering iron, but this is my first foray into building an IC.
